Hey guys I need some help. I have been using the WD TV Live Hub 1TB Media Center for about 10 years now. It has been awesome as it supported every popular media format and included apps like Netflix and Hulu. Unfortunately it has seen the end of life and is no longer support by Western Digital. They don’t even make it anymore and the newer codecs and compression software is not supported on this device. It is slowly becoming obsolete and I need something to replace it and I’d rather NOT use a computer. Do you guys know of anything like this that is currently being sold and supported? Thank you.
Media Player for TV Needed
Of course they have cheaper versions that arent as powerful like fire tv and fire stick… just thinking you likely want something with more memory and apps. I would go with teh cube and get Kodi installed. That will manage all your media from anywhere in the house(stream from a computer on the network) or your phone, or through apps, and so on. You can even store media on it. You can also use it to watch free movies, videos, etc. but for the actual creation use of it, its essentially a media manager/streaming app.
Oh, and Kodi is actually a legit media manager, it just gets used for all teh free movies and stuff but not its original intention.
I use Plex, but you’d need a computer on the same network to store media. You can load Plex on the google/amazon/apple sticks devices that they have.
I also use Kodi for the aforementioned streaming, but since my internet isn’t reliable, I prefer predownloaded stuff.
Also doesn’t the steamlink do streaming?
I have about 2TB of downloaded content on WDTV. A Fire stick, Roku or Apple TV won’t work for me. Shield TV looks like the best option. Can you load VLC app on the Shield?
I am sure it does, it is running a full android operating system, so it has the ability to download apps from the play store. Be sure to get the higher version shield, You can also plug in an external drive as well to it as it has usb ports on it.
I just bought an 8TB hard drive and attached it to my Asus RT-AC88U to run as a NAS. I also bought the Shield TV Pro so I can run a Plex server and all the other apps. Is Plex Premium worth the money?
I bought a lifetime membership back when it was much cheaper…not sure now, but I use it! Embly (spelling?) is also worth checking out.
It occurred to me that this might be a prime candidate for a Raspberry Pi.
(Mmm… Sexy, old thread.)
